Skumbaag Returns!

So in the last entry I mentioned in passing the phantasmagoric heavy metal vaudeville troupe that is Skumbaag. I haven’t seen them in nearly ten years, but back in the day of my New Mexico life, they were quite the spectacle. The first show of theirs I saw was rather subdued (for a Skumbaag show), but they did provide a laundry basket full of coffee-stained tighty-whities as props while they played their (then) new hit single “brown stripe”. Being the Techies that we were, we out-weirded the band by wearing the props on our head while we danced and sang along. (That earned us mentions in later interviews with the band.) Their grand Albuquerque shows were another thing altogether, and truly defy description. Each show was a unique event, and each combined the best of music, theater, perfomance art, and out-right wonderful weirdness.

Anyway, out of the blue I got an email from a fellow in Albuquerque who hosted a Skumbaag reunion show just a couple weeks ago. It seems band members have scattered across the continent, but they (almost) all returned to put on another show. I wish I’d have heard about it *before* it happened, not so I could have gone (not yet wealthy enough), but so I could have urged all those I know still in New Mexico to go.

It looks like it was another great show. There are pictures to prove it.

  2. John’Bo and I are deeply honored to stumble across this entry while scanning the web for pics from our latest skum-rockin’/cheezy marimba band tour this summer in the great state of Wisconsin! We made several appearances in the greater Door County area (Green Bay, etc.), each time the band members were introduced under different aliases (?), and each time under a different band name (Vespus, Skumbaag, PoozieWypt, Skumbaag Tribute Band)! Thanks for the fun, Keg! Look for our next appearances at Sol Arts Art Space in Albuquerque in January ‘05 (solarts.org), and in the Phoenix area in March ‘05 for a completely “unofficial” CD release party! Eric, we give you an honorary Skumbaag SA-LUTE, complete with Brown StripeŽ! Keep it real and Skumbaagy in Georgia!
