Wysteria

Wysteria was unknown to me until I moved to Georgia, and now it is one of my favorite plants. The large purple flowers appear this time of year and look like large bunches of grapes. The woody vines are rather invasive, so many people here do not like them. Not me, though. An old-growth wysteria tree stops me in my tracks every time.

I guess you don’t remember the summers we spent at 6 Flags and the long tunnels that were covered in wisteria. It smelled wonderful and the tunnels were the best places to cool off on a hot day. We have two trees in our yard, and the pine trees just down from school (I think they line the cemetary, or maybe it is a long driveway) are covered in the vines in the spring. Love you both!

The fact that the house I live in now has no wysteria around it at all saddens me extremely. It is one of my favorite things about spring and sitting out on a warm night with the smell of wysteria all around is something I will always love.

Wysteria is the easiest to grow.. you can start
it from a vine … just lay it on the ground and
here and there put a little dirt over the vine
    It will root..
If a vine lays on the ground it will root…it is
    so easy..

So . . . I’m interested in planting a purple Wysteria in a heavy asian influenced ornamental lattice planter and combination bench. During my trips to nurseries, I have noticed there is a Chinese version and a Japanese version. Since I live in Washington state, might someone experienced in this plant suggest which may be a better type for the climate?

Hello! My mother and I live in Massachusetts. My mom lives in Methuen, Ma and I live right on the beach, Plum Island, Ma. My grandmother lives in the house beside my mother and has had a wisteria plant for 7 years just growing in her yard. It never bloomed until this year. We were wondering how to cut a piece of it, or where, and how to plant it so it will grow. Since I live on the beach, can I do this too? I do have a large front yard with grass and I also made a garden on the side of my house. Anyway, we were hoping to get some information on how to properly cut and plant this beautiful plant and also how long will it take to grow and bloom?
Thank you so much for your time!

My wysteria is six years old. It grows prolifically but never has any flowers. Last year it sent out many leaves, then died off, then sent out many more leaves. As always there were no flowers. This year no leaves have come at all although one can see buds on the plant which have failed to open. I am watering it for half an hour each day, morning and evening. It grows on the wall of my house which faces north-east and so does not get all that much sun.

I have cut off the top dead half of the plant, leaving the living part on the bottom. Is there anything I can do to increase its health so that it will put out leaves this year and, maybe, just maybe, bring forth flowers?!

Thank you for your help and advice.

i love the wysteria at busch gardens, va. it adorns an outside restaraunt patio. it has woody stems that climb up wooden posts to create a beautiful canapy of foliage and purple flowers. i bought a wysteria plant hoping to create the same effect on my back deck but the vines that have climbed to the horizontal trellis are very leafy. how do i achieve that “woody” look?

Just wanted to know if Wysteria can grow wild. I live in Ga. and we put a wire type fence up along our back yard which meets the woods. In no time all these wild vines grew all over it and it is coverd now. I noticed some pod like flowers growing on it. They are like a plum color but they do not have much of a smell to them. Could this be Wysteria??? It is shaped just like a wysteria flower, but not as big. It is all over the ground in the woods too and growing up some of the trees.

My wysteria vine is about 3 to 4 years old. It gets full sun most of the day, it loves it’s location (on the side of my garage)since it grows huge each year. It gets nothing more(water, etc.) than the mountain laurels and lilies that are planted around it get. It has never bloomed. I have pruned it back in the fall and try to keep the enormous growth under control during the summer, by trimming the new growth into a manageable shape. I never even see buds on the plant. Thank you.

I live in a house that was built in 1957, and I believe that my Wysteria tree in my front yard is about the same age. Whoever planted it years ago trained it to be a tree insstead of a vine. It is so fully covered in blooms during Spring, it looks like a huge purple explosion. I think that planting it in the form of a tree gives a much bolder display during Spring. If you plant Wysteria anywhere near a fence or trellis, it will easily grow and climb. If you want it to look more like a tree, you must train a one trunked plant to stand straight up. don’t plant it near a fence or lattice. Keep it staked up until the trunk can support the outgrowth. Then in the summer or fall, trim the vines hanging down on the ground. It will almost look like a cave inside of the hanging tendrils. When buying from a nursery, make sure you see buds or flowers. Buy in the Spring too to see if it has blooms. If planting by seed, it will take forever to get a blooming plant…Years! I live in a desert environment, and my Wysteria has adapted very well to this climate. I don’t even water it anymore. It’s one of the reasons I bought my house………..

Responding to Wendy Sinclair - it probably needs more light to get flowers. Maybe it can be transplanted??

Responding to Midnight Female - I’ve seen someone with a weeping cherry tree (beautiful) let ivy grow all over it. For a couple years it was very pretty. This year, it’s almost all ivy and very few flowers. I think the tree is getting choked to death by the ivy. You might want to consider that with your wisteria growing up against a tree - can you grow it on a pole or trellis or something instead?

Some good links to answer so many questions:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisteria
    http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/1000/1246.html
    http://www.gardenadvice.co.uk/advisor/plants/wisteria/index.html

My wife bought a wisteria plant of the American variety a few weeks ago and I planted it today without reading its label. The attached card says it can grow to 30 feet in height, and I put it right next to our little house.
Tomorrow I’ll dig it up and do something else with it. Apparently the seeds from its seed pods are poisonous, so I’m not putting it in the back yard with the dog…

    WYSTERIA TO THE RESCUE

After my heart surgery, I acquired many side affects like CHF …(causes me to be weak, dizzy, nauseated, can’t breath, chest pain as well as leg & butt cramps. I also get seizures due to diabetes. During a stressful season in my life while I climbed up & down hills to get home, all the above symptoms developed. I had no NITRO-GLYCERIN or any other MED with me. To stop a hard fall, I grabbed a barb wire fence and slid to the ground like a lump of mud. After landing on the ground, I smelled a wonderful scented green bush … WYSTERIA. I grabbed some and put it to my nose. I could breath better. I didn’t feel so nauseous. I managed to get up.

I swear WYSTERIA rescued me up so that I could continue home where I called the paramedics. Thank GOD for WYSTERIA.

Has anyone else had healing benefits from WYSTERIA?

Can you eat WYSTERIA or drink a WYSTERIA TEA?

    How about a WYSTERIA poultice?

I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY WYSTERIA WISDOM, IF YOU WILL KINDLY SHARE WITH ME.

    THANKS,

I live in southeast Texas. About 30 years ago I dug up three wisteria plants from an vacant lot a few miles from my house. I planted each near the base of trees in my yard. All three plants grew fantastically well. Two of the trees were full grown at 40 ft tall and have a multitude of beautiful deep purple wisteria blooms twice a year. The other tree has been pruned back many times by the power company but it still is growing strong as is the gorgeous wisteria that entertwines in it’s branches. It too blooms beautifully twice a year. One other nice thing about the wisteris that I like is that the vine has spread all down my fence line of 200 feet. It’s all so pretty at blooming time. As for it being poisonous, I’ve raised kids, grandkids, dogs, cats, goats, cows and chickens on this same property with no problem from the wisteria. I have since also given away sprouts to friends and family — the best way to remember others is to see the plants shared by us all.
