I’ve not read the link above…which may make what I am going to say seem brilliant or stupid after I DO read the link. When we were in France our friends told us that the Beaujolais Nouveau was the worst wine of the year…there were festivals and such to celebrate its coming, but not because the wine was good…because of what it signaled. In general, everyone involved agreed that the wine was crap. I think it is funny now, because I know all of these BoBos in the USA who think the Beaujolais Nouveau is so great…and I wonder if they realize how bad it really is and are just trying to sound trendy.

Anyone who reads what Beaujolais Nouvea actually -is- would understand that it’s not meant to be a fine wine. It’s meant to be a fun wine, and it is. The reason you need to drink it young is because it will rot in the bottle if you try to age it! When I first learned about BN, the point, to me, was that it’s an easy drinking red wine that you can drink with a hamburger and french fries. Doesn’t mean it’s swill, it’s just meant to be a really casual wine.

Anything that gets more people trying wine is a good thing as far as I’m concerned.

Btw, I’m serving a Beaujolais (though not nouveau) at my Thanksgiving dinner (among several other wines.)

Lyn, I agree with you. I think the people that do know what Beaujolais Nouveau is meant to be are few and far between. So many people have bought into the marketing hype that makes it the most anticipated wine of the year, that they’ve made it out to be more than it really is.

I’ve bought plenty of BN, and will continue to even after reading the critique. Especially if it is as pleasant as the vintage from two years ago!
