A Betty Bowers type has written an amusing letter to the editor of our local newspaper.

  1. i have to agree with patty, if the athens paper started running pictures of naked men on a fairly regular basis, i too would possibly get a subscription.

  2. “America’s Best Christian”?!? I guess the baptists don’t go for the seven deadly sins. Hubris, anyone…

  3. Matt, Betty Bowers is a prominent member of Landover Baptist Church.

  5. A woman after my own heart (as vile and black as it is). Ban the newspaper and retreat into your God-fearing lives!

My God wouldn’t care about such things. This just reinforces my belief (yes, I have faith.) that religion is merely a tool created by humnas to control other humans.

Of course, I do enjoy singing southern hymnals with Matt. Swing low, sweet char-i-ot! :)

  8. Yet another one of my fears of moving south of mason-dixon line. Maybe her bible belt was on too tight.

  9. Give the South a break! It’s been my experience that the North has a similar amount of racists, religious nuts, antigovernment malitias, etc. than the South does. The difference is that in the North, it’s considered polite to be more reserved about these things, whereas in the South, they show much more pride in being public about them. Therefore, there isn’t more nuttiness in the South, Southerners are just more up front about their nuttiness. As the “angry black man” from the South that I roomed with for a semester in Iowa told me upon coming to the “liberal” north, he found that he came to appreciate the “racist he knew” over the the local ones he had to geuss about.

  11. The same is true with the hate groups and moral militas around the country. People don’t like what these groups have to say, but I would rather see and know my enemies than have them go stealthly underground. Let the KKK demonstrate in Cincinnati or wherever. This gives them the opportunity to *prove* how stupid and small they are. I think such situations’ good outweigh the bad. But, I am in the so called “majority” (white and male). So, your opinion may vary.

  12. Does anyone have a copy of this picture? Because so far it doesn’t sound like it’s all that bad of a picture. Please let me know if you have a copy of it you could send me…however.

  14. I found this site as I was looking for “Malitias in North America”.I am a young black man in northern California and I am very impressed with the carring-ons of “the south”. It seems as though people are starting to realize that hate is indeed ugly in nature,or any setting for that matter.I also want to praise the folks at this site for giving me a place to vent.”The only god that lives, lives inside of you”

  15. I just wanted to post for the people that don’t know- the Landover Baptist Church web site is thankfully a parody. Such a church does not exist. There isn’t even a town in Iowa called Freehold. It is a disgusting and repulsive parody making fun of the Christian religion. Please inform everyone you know that has seen this horrible site that it is a horrible joke and people should try their best to get it off the net. It wouldn’t be so bad if they made it clear that it was a joke- but I have been to alot of sites talking about it- and most people don’t realize it is a parody. Christians do not actually believe those things and would never act that way.
Also, I am from the South and I agree with Matt. Racism exists everywhere- it’s just that unfortunately alot of Southereners who are still prejudice are more open about it. And also, people tend to forget that white people are NOT the only racists in this country. I am “white” and have been the victim of racism many, many times by African Americans and Hispanics.
So now that I’ve gotten all that off my chest- thanks for letting me post!
