Impact Craters

Sure, you’ve seen pictures of Meteor Crater, Arizona, but are there any impact craters near you? Probably. Found at the always good Poor Clio.

  1. Nope - none closer than Meteor Crater. I was saddened that none of them (and I checked them all, mind you) was as cool looking as Meteor Crater. Neat site, though! Now I REALLY want to visit Odessa, TX! A crater right on the surface!

  2. Let me assure you, as someone who has visited Odessa, TX on many occasions…you REALLY probably don’t want to visit Odessa, TX.
The best Tourism PR campaign I’ve ever seen (well, the funniest, anyway)…”Fort Stockton, TX…You may never pass this way again!”

  3. On the sign welcoming you into Nevada, Iowa:

“Welcome to Nevada, the twenty-sixth best small town in Iowa!”

  4. Yeah — I’ve read Friday Night Lights — I’m aware of the reality of Odessa. Ick.

  5. Now to be fair to Odessa, as a highschooler my Mom, some friends, and I undertook the six hour drive (just next door) to attend Shakespearean plays staged in their reasonably faithful reproduction of the Globe. I thought the plays and their corresponding road trips to Odessa were quite nice. Midland, however, is a pit.
