The enema within

Back in college, my friends laughed at the notion of colon irrigation. Have you heard of this? It’s basically a regimen the cleans your bowels from the inside, flushing out accumulated waste. It seems to be a fringe thing, but there are facilities devoted to making you squeaky clean. Ian Belcher, journalist with The Guardian went to one on assignment, sceptical at the beginning. After seeing what came out (his photographer released a marble he’d swallowed some twenty-two years earlier), he’s now a convert. I must admit… I’d like to go through the program myself.

  1. Again…where was I when colon irrigation came up in conversation? So is this the same as enemas? Several of my friends at the Natural Food Store used to fast and then do enemas every six months or so. At the store we also had this lovely picture book for sale of this really long cat hairball looking things that had come out of people’s butts…maybe that was more along the colon irrigation lines. Oh…side note…the psyllium husk laxative that we sold had the exact same picture on the bottle as the natural drain cleaner…they were two entirely different products made by different companies, but it WAS kinda funny.

  2. But it was terribly funny and fascinating at the time. To hear somebody’s first hand account of the accumulation of sludge and debris they had witnessed released from their colon was remarkably captivating. Wasn’t lunch right after that conversation? It was a professor who related his account, though I can’t recall who it was now.

  5. Oh, I don’t care about the health benefits (or lack thereof). I’ve just got a wierd idea of what’s fun. ;^)

  6. After 10 years, I still have not been able to purge my memory of the details Randy described around the lunch table that day. Thank you, Eric — now those memories will have similarly ghastly images to accompany them through the rest of my days.
